Before You Publish

What to do Before You Publish

Before you publish a post, there are a few things you should check. Yoast SEO is a plug-in I use to help with this process. Below I have organized a list to get you started.

  • Focus Keyword
    • Summarize your post in a few words.
    • This keyword will be used throughout your post.
  • Post Title
    • 60 characters
    • Include focus keyword at the beginning of the title if possible.
    • Make your title eye-catching. Something that stands out from everyone else’s.
  • Edit Permalink
    • Include focus keyword.
  • Heading 1
    • This heading should include the focus keyword.
  • First Paragraph
    • Include focus keyword.
    • Draw the audience in with your first paragraph.
    • I usually use this paragraph for my meta description.
  • Heading 2 and Heading 3
    • Break up your text. People can lose interest if paragraphs are too long.
  • Meta Description
    • 160 characters.
    • This will be under your title in the search engine.
    • Include focus keyword.
  • Text length
    • Keep your audience engaged.
  • Optimize Images
    • Alt Attributes that include a focus keyword.
    • Optimize images to load easier. I use WP Smush plug-in.
  • Categories
    • Add categories – this is the topic of your blog or table of contents for your blog.
  • Tags
    • Add tags. They are sub-categories for your post. I think of them like hashtags.
    • No more than 10.
  • Proof Read
    • Correct grammar and spelling.
  • Add Affiliates
    • Affiliates should relate to your content
  • Outside Link
    • Add an outside link to draw your audience to another part of your site.
  • Check links to make sure they work.
    • I like them to open in a separate page.
  • Publish
  • Share
