Crochet baskets make great decor as well as storage for many things. They can be used as candle huggies, planters, and more.
You will need to know how to:
Crochet in the Round – Start with a circle, increase each round.
Waistcoat Stitch (done with a half double crochet) – waistcoat stitch is a single crochet through the center of the posts of the stitch in the previous round. I used a half double instead of a single crochet.
Half Double Crochet (hdc) – yo (yarn over), insert hook, yo, pull through stitch, yo, pull through all three loops on hook.
Slip Stitch (sl st) – insert hook, yarn over (yo), pull through stitch, pull through the loop on hook.
Increase – crochet 2 times in the same stitch.
Back Loops – See photo below.
A half double crochet will have 3 loops on the top of the stitch. 1 is the back loop and 3 is the front loop.
Use a stitch marker to mark the first crochet in each round, this is where your slip stitch will end each round. You will start your first crochet in the same stitch. (Skip over slip stitch loop)
Crochet in the back two loops when making the base of the basket.
Make a circle; Chain 4, sl st in chain 1 making a circle.
Half double crochet (hdc) 8 stitches in the center of the circle, sl st in the first stitch to join. Pull tail to tighten.
Increase Round 2
Work 2 half double crochets in each stitch. At the end of the round, you should have 16 stitches. Join the round with a slip stitch.
Increase Round 3
